December 29,2005(CYBERZENA MONITORING)- The VOA Amharic service reported that students at Wondyirad school in Addis Ababa were held incommunicado well into the evening today while some female students were allowed to leave.
The VOA reporter in Addis quoting insider sources also pointed out that police has provoked unsuspecting students at GCA comprehensive secondary when it entered into the school compound in the early hours of the day; anticipating a repeat of the protests witnessed at other schools the previous day.The students began chanting slogans at the sight of the police and nineth grade students soon followed suit; the sources quoted by the VOA said.The same sources went on to say that the police ,probably, fired tear gas which resulted in the falling down of several students .The students began throwing stones afterwards and several windows were smashed.Consequently the Police has beaten up a number of students severely.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the English Sevice of the VOA,Ethiopian Minister of Information Ato Birhan Hailu downplayed the protests describing them as 'minor' problems involving 'some people and students'.He said the police has put the situation under control.

October 19,2005,2005(VOA)-In Ethiopia, the government has lifted the immunity of nearly 100 members of parliament who are boycotting the assembly to protest what they call voting irregularities. Anders Johnsson is the secretary-general of the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union, which works to promote representative democracy around the world and dialogue among the worlds lawmakers. Its membership includes more than 141 parliaments and legislative organizations from around the world, including two dozen from sub-Saharan Africa.

Mr. Johnsson told Voice of America reporter William Eagle that hes surprised by the Ethiopian governments decision to lift immunity from opposition members. He says the move restricts the ability of legislators to debate and formulate national policy on behalf of the electorate. Without the human right of parliamentarians to dissent or enjoy freedom of assembly, Mr. Johnsson says, its unlikely there will be human rights for average person. He adds that a member of parliament should only be taken to court if a crime has been committed. As for the opposition boycott of parliament, the IPU secretary general says its not unusual nor should it be considered illegal for parliamentarians to use boycotts as a form of protest.
